Immigration and Naturalization Research
in New York State |
| |
|
The Research Library receives genealogical requests concerning passengers to America because these immigrants often landed in New York City. However, our research library does not have a strong collection of material to help with such requests since we concentrate more heavily on upstate New York than we do on the metropolitan New York City area.
What we do have on immigrants and passenger lists is limited to published books and some microfilmed indexes. We do not have original ships' records (many of which are at the National Archives in Washington,
DC).
Our best suggestion to you is that you consider the following sources:
- National Archives and Records Service
8th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue
Washington, DC 20408
- Immigration and Naturalization Service
119 D Street NW
Washington, DC 20536
- Museum of Immigration/Statue of Liberty
National Monument
Liberty Island
New York, NY 10004
Some books on the subject are:
- Locating Your Immigrant Ancestor: A
Guide to Naturalization Records, by James
C. Neagles and Lila Lee Neagles. Rev. Ed.
(Logan, Utah: Everton, 1986).
- The Source: A Guidebook of American
Genealogy. Edited by Arlene Eakle and
Johni Cerny (Salt Lake City: Ancestry
Publishing, 1984). Chapter 15: "Tracking
Immigrant Origins."
- Genealogical Research in the National
Archives (Washington, DC: National
Archives and Records Service, 1982).
- Genealogical Resources in the New York
Metropolitan Area. Edited by Estelle M.
Guzik (New York: Jewish Genealogical Society,
1989).
- They Came in Ships, by John Philip
Colletta, (Salt Lake City, Utah: Ancestry
Publishing, 1989).
