Scope and Content Note
The diaries in this collection
were mostly written by Mary Thurston Duroe of
Chenango County, N.Y., with a few by at least one of her children (most
likely Laura Eliza). Additionally, the 1892-1897 diary
was primarily written by Mary's husband, Collingwood Rodney Duroe. The diaries discuss family and social life,
farming, weather, travel, and other local topics. Family members were not
generally referred to by their full names in the diaries, but instead by
initials or nicknames. This collection also contains some ephemera of Mary
Thurston Duroe's son, Vernon Everett Duroe.
Biographical Note
Mary Thurston Duroe
(born Mary Ann Thurston) was born on February 22, 1847 in New Lisbon,
Otsego County, N.Y. Her husband, Collingwood Rodney Duroe,
was born on March 16, 1846 in Norwich, Chenango County, N.Y. They married
in 1870 in Norwich, and were primarily an agricultural family. Of their
[nine?] children, those mentioned most prominently in the diaries were
Vernon Everett Duroe, Addison Elias Duroe, Francis John (Frank) Duroe,
Ruth Duroe, Laura Eliza Duroe,
Jane Duroe, and Mary Ann Duroe.1
